Broome County taking steps to help people due to cold

The Broome County Executive’s Office is taking steps to help keep people safe due to the cold.

Their Code Blue Plan went into effect last night. The County Executive’s Office says there are three emergency shelter facilities in Broome County available for homeless housing.

Those are the YWCA located at 80 Hawley St. in Binghamton, the YMCA located at 61 Susquehanna St. in Binghamton, and the Volunteers of America located at 320 Chenango St. in Binghamton.

The County Executive’s Office says anyone in need of shelter can go to those places to get out of the weather without concern for payment.

The County Executive’s Office says on Thursday BC Transit will not turn any rider away due to inability to pay. If someone needs a ride to get out of the cold or to go somewhere warm and can’t afford the fare, Broome County says it will cover the cost.

Also The Broome County Health Department has issued a list of public places where residents can go to get out of the cold. The Health Department recommends that residents check with the establishments before visiting, to make sure they are open. Phone numbers have been provided, so those in need can call for their hours of operation.
