The Broome County Sheriff’s Office has tips on what you can do to when throwing out Christmas gift boxes

The Broome County Sheriff’s Office is asking people to be cautious when throwing out their new TV and other Christmas gift boxes. They say burglars are keeping track of which homes got nice, new stuff.

The sheriff’s offices says waiting for garbage day to throw out your new items’ boxes and keeping your garbage in eyesight through a window can help deter criminals.

They also advise taking the big boxes and folding them in half.

They have advice for small boxes, too. “Small boxes, cut them up and do the same. Flatten them out so people can’t see what they have on them or what they say,” said Sheriff David E. Harder.

The sheriff’s office also warns that people can look through windows to see all your new items. They advise calling 911 if you see someone acting suspicious.
